KUCHING: The Sarawak government’s capabilities in innovation have made it a benchmark for other countries across the globe and other states in Malaysia.

State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion said other federal agencies such as Defence Ministry, Transport Ministry, Works Ministry and Agriculture Ministry also looked up to Sarawak for its innovation.

“We have been used as a benchmark by many national agencies, for example, the Perak, Terengganu and Kedah state governments as well as the Registrar of Societies (RoS) Sabah, to name a few.

“We also have our neighbour and the government of Papua New Guinea coming to us, which is among our success stories.

“This culture of innovation has embedded in the hearts and minds of the civil service in Sarawak and I am happy to report that this will be improved upon, continued and enhanced in the future.”

He said this during his address at the Sarawak Civil Service Innovation Convention Awards (SCSICA) 2020 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.

Jaul said the state civil service’s mantra of “innovation for a purpose and for the right reason” was not only for winning awards as more importantly, innovation had to benefit the people.

“I have said before in my address at the Civil Servants Day in 2019 that in our field, what is important is service to the people as well as in the service in the context of innovation brought about by the State Civil Service (SCS).

“Firstly, service innovation must have an immediate impact on the rakyat, where we could not be too comfortable or easily satisfied with the existing services. Instead, we have to empathise with the plight of the people.”

Jaul said the service delivered by SCS must meet the needs and expectations of the people, especially in testing times.

“All pressing and critical issues must be addressed promptly. Any delays would affect the service delivery system and impugn public confidence.”
